The overlook is actually a part of Goodnow Park and City-owned land used for domestic water storage. The site offers a panoramic view of the original plat of the community. To the West, a good portion of the campus can also be viewed. If you are just out exploring our community, this site is a must see. This area makes a great place to go and eat your lunch. There are several tables placed throughout the area with parking just a few feet away.

Civil War Memorial Arch

Icon On Sept. 8, 1898 the arch was dedicated and has stood guard over the northeast entrance to Heritage Park since. Erected as a memorial to those who gave their lives in the War between the States, the monument was planned and carried out by the veterans of the Grand Army.
 

Council Grove City Water Supply Lake

Icon Council Grove City Water Supply Lake is a small lake located to the west on the large Council Grove Lake operated by the Corps of Engineers. The City Water Supply Lake is surrounded by residential development and is near the airport.
 

Council Grove Lake

Icon Council Grove Lake is located in the famous Flint Hills region of Kansas. The lake is one mile northwest of the historic town of Council Grove and within walking distance of the Santa Fe Trail. The lake is in a very aesthetic setting with the rolling bluestem hills trimmed with hickory, oak, walnut, and elm along the streams. Council Grove is on the Neosho River, whose name comes from the Osage Indian word Neosho meaning "water within."

Diamond Springs

Icon When the Santa Fe Trail was first surveyed in 1825, Diamond Springs was called the Diamond of the Plain, and records of Santa Fe traders who passed by Diamond Springs date back as early as 1821 when William Becknell, called the father of the trail, combined several Indian paths and created a line of commerce between the United States and the residents of Santa Fe, then governed by Mexico. The Frank Atkinson Ranch was located at Diamond Springs on Turkey Creek.

Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge

Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was established in 1966 as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, John Redmond Reservoir flood control project. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages 18,463 acres upstream of the reservoir, most of which is in the floodplain of the Neosho River. Refuge habitats, consisting of prairie grasslands, bottomland hardwood timber, shallow wetlands, and croplands, are managed to provide food and habitat for migratory birds and resident wildlife.
 

Flint Hills Scenic Byway

Icon The Flint Hills Scenic Byway stretches 47.2 miles across the Flint Hills of Kansas on K-177 between Council Grove and Cassoday in east central Kansas. It is a beautiful drive year-round showing off the panoramic vistas of the tallgrass prairie.

The perimeter trail is used by many to increase their level of fitness or simply to enjoy some of the natural beauty and wildlife of the park as it twists through sections of naturalized Kansas lowland areas. Family and group gatherings occur frequently at the two covered picnic shelters and plenty of open space remains for individual or group activities.

I-35 Rest Stop, Ottawa

The I-35 Rest Stop, near Ottawa, at mile marker 174.5, has native limestone architecture in its restroom facility. Multiple pinic structures. The view is vista-like, located on a high ridgetop, primarily agricultural lands, framed by cottonwood/burr oak forests.
 

I-70 Rest Area

The I-70 Rest Stop, mile marker 337, is just east of Paxico, Kansas. Enjoy a great view of the Mill Creek Valley and take in a bit of Flint Hills history with the Kansas Historical Markers and The Guardian of the Plains piece. Kansas Flint Hills brochures available here!
 

I-70 Rest Stop, Junction City

The I-70 Rest Stop, Junction City, is located at mile marker 294. This site includes a Kansas Historical Marker.
 

I-70 Rest Stop, Manhattan

The I-70 Rest Stop, Manhattan, is located at mile marker 311. It is situated in a grove of large sycamores, oaks, American elm, white ash, white pine and honey locust. An historical marker interprets Historic Fort Riley. This is the closed Interstate Rest Stop to the Konza Prairie.
 

Jeffrey Energy Wildlife Area

Icon Jeffrey Energy Center has 7,000 acres available for public use. People can hunt, fish, and watch wildlife in two designated wildlife management areas (WMAs). WMA #1 is outside the actual energy plant grounds. WMA #2 can only be accessed by entering through the Center's main gate. Kiosks outside the energy center have brochures available for you to take and there are directional signs to assist you. The wildlife areas display some spectacular prairie flowers and attract many species of birds throughout the seasons. Along with the prairie there are two lakes, as well as several ponds and streams to explore.
 

Kansas Landscape Arboretum

Over 1,000 species of native and exotic woody plants adapted to the Kansas environment are found here.
 

Kansas State University Gardens

Icon The KSU Gardens is a horticulture display garden that has been established as an educational resource and learning laboratory for K-State students and the visiting public. The KSU Gardens is a privately funded project located on the campus of Kansas State University. When completed, the Gardens will be a 19-acre garden designed to show hardscape and tested ornamental plant material in different aesthetic settings.
 

Kansas State University Insect Zoo

The zoo features a number of exciting educational exhibits, including a Tropical tree/flooded Amazonian Rainforest, the Desert-Scape, Tropical Nighthouse (Cave), Giant Leafcutter Ant colony, Observation Beehive, a Mock Kitchen, a Freshwater Display, a number of terraria with numerous species of tropical insects, tarantulas and spiders, scorpions, and other arthropods, and a Biodiversity Display.
 

Kansas Vietnam Veteran's Memorial

Icon The 13 x 46 foot, black granite memorial lists the names of the 796 Kansans who either were killed or are still officially listed as Missing in Action during the Vietnam War.

Lyon State Fishing Lake

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks manage a total of 581 acres. The area is situated on the eastern edge of the Flint hills region in Kansas. The 441 acre wildlife area is dominated by tall grass native prairie with wooded draws running trough the area.
 

Manhattan City Park

The community's largest pool resides in this park and a large outdoor stage in the Northeast section of the park hosts our nationally recognized Arts in the Park, an outdoor evening entertainment series during the summer. Several ball fields, a Rose Garden, tennis courts with lights, an outdoor basketball court as well as a mile long perimeter multi-use trail, really makes this a park which offers something for everyone. The park also houses a 30-foot tall statue of Johnny Kaw, the pioneer Kansas wheat farmer, a tall tale hero designed to spark interest in Kansas history.

If you enjoy the outdoor life - fishing, boating, camping and all the rest - and you like a tranquil, manageable setting in which to enjoy it, then the Marion County Park & Lake is the place to visit.
 

Marion Reservoir & Wildlife Area

Icon If you enjoy camping, boating, fishing, hunting, or wildlife watching - we have the place for you. Completed in 1968, Marion Reservoir encompasses 6,200 acres of water surrounded by another 6,000 acres of public lands. The lake is located just north of U.S. Highway 56 between the communities of Marion and Hillsboro, Kansas.
 

Maxwell Wildlife Refuge

The Maxwell Wildlife Regue, located six miles north of Canton, Kansas, has over 2200 acres of prairie habitat. Tram rides to view the wildlife are available.
 

Milford Lake

Military Trail Road

Icon The Military Trail Road runs from Wamego to Manhattan, with St. George near the center. The Military Trail Road, overlooking the Kansas River, runs a mile or so south of Highway 24.
 

Miniature Train

Icon Children and adults can ride the Miniature Train which is operated by the Emporia Sertoma Club. The train follows a circular track for 1/3 mile through Soden's Grove Park near the Cottonwood River.

Neosho Riverwalk

Icon The Neosho Riverwalk connects the Madonna of the Trail DAR statue depicting a pioneer mother and her two children, the Guardian of the Grove statue honoring the Kaw, the Neosho River Crossing (Santa Fe Trail crossing) and the Kaw Mission State Historic Site. This ADA accessible, lighted, landscaped walkway is a favorite gathering place for those who enjoy the serenity of nature. It becomes a seasonal delight when decorated for the Christmas holidays.

Olsburg Marshes

The Olsburg Marsh is a major migratory waterfowl and songbird nesting area. The area around Olsburg is among the most beautiful in Kansas! It includes the northern Flint Hills, the Blue River Valley, and the upper end of Tuttle Creek Reservoir.
 

Oregon Trail Nature Park & Jeffrey Energy Center Wildlife Area

Icon This park was developed with the help of the Western Resources Green Team. It is actually part of the grounds associated with the Jeffrey Energy Center. If you take the Sea of Grass trail up to the top of the ridge, you will have a spectacular 360 degree panorama which includes the power plant and its principal cooling lake to the north. To the south, stretching from one horizon to the other, is the Kaw River valley, which marks the southerly edge of the great Pleistocene glaciers. This is a great spot to scan for red-tailed hawks, northern harriers and turkey vultures. The tallgrass prairie along this trail has an abundance of wildflowers. Look for rose verbena, New Jersey tea and green milkweed in May and Purple Coneflower in summer.
 

Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Area

Pillsbury Crossing's 59 acres are among the most scenic areas of the northern Flint Hills region. During normal stream flow, you may canoe, kayak, or take a small row boat upstream as far as 1/2 mile. There are some areas suitable for primitive camping by special permit only. Birdwatching is popular, and there is a small hiking trail provided in cooperation with a local conservation club in Manhattan. Although there are no trails marked, you may still enjoy a hike in the areas along either side of the stream also. Fishing is also popular at Pillsbury Crossing, where the fish include channel cat, spotted bass, largemouth bass, bullhead catfish, and carp.

Pottawatomie Lake #2

Icon State Fishing Lake No. 2.is located about four miles northeast of Manhattan. Pottawatomie Lake #2 is a scenic lake of about 75 acres that holds nice populations of crappie, largemouth bass and bluegill. The lake also produces impressive strings of channel catfish and holds some very nice walleyes.
 

Pottawatomie State Fishing Lake #1 & Wildlife Area

Icon This area provides fishing, hunting, camping and wildlife viewing opportunities. Located in the northern edge of the Flint Hills, this area provides a wide variety of habitats, from native grassland to oak/hardwood forest. Species found on the area include bobwhite quail, fox squirrels and cotton-tail rabbits. Trapping is also allowed on the area.
 

Prairie Passage Stone Sculpture Garden

Icon Eight massive limestone carved sculptures present a variety of images depicting Lyon County history. They range in height from 10-15 feet high and weigh between 5 and 9 tons. The carvings depict the rich past of Emporia.
 

Randolph State Park

Randolph Trail

14 miles of equestrian trails that can also be enjoyed by hikers. The horse trails are accessible year round, however the South entrance to the park is closed during the winter.
 

Rock Springs 4-H Center

Rolander Express Trail

Icon A major hiking-biking trail route has been mapped along rural gravel and dirt roads around Olsburg. "The Rolander Express Trail" is 28.6 miles long, virtually all lying along little traveled rural roads.

Santa Fe Trail at Lost Springs

Lost Spring, which is actually 2 1/2 miles west of the village of Lost Springs, was a major watering place and campground for the Santa Fe Trail. There is much superstition and mystery surrounding the spring.

School Creek Park

School Creek Park has the most remote setting of all the camping parks at Milford Lake. The park offers primitive camping along the western lakeshore and is operated by the Corps of Engineers.
 

Schrumph Hill Overlook

Icon Award-winning scenic overlook along the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, Kansas Highway 177, just south of Cottonwood Falls. Interpretive panels provide education about the prairie and native grasses.
 

Skyline/Mill Creek Scenic Drive

Tuttle Creek Wildlife Refuge

Tuttle Creek Reservoir is the key unit in the system of flood control projects within the Kansas River Basin and is the second largest lake in Kansas. The Wildlife Area contains approximately 65% permanent vegetation (trees and grasses) with the remaining 35% in cropland, marshes and other food plots. There are three marshes that can be pumped totaling 365 acres and three marshes dependant on runoff totaling 115 acres. Good numbers of white-tail deer and turkeys can be found on the area. Other species to hunt include pheasant, bobwhite quail, fox squirrel, cottontail rabbit and migrating waterfowl.
 

Washington County State Lake

Icon The lake and surrounding area harbors quail, pheasant, dove, squirrels, rabbits, white-tailed deer, beaver, muskrats, raccoons, coyotes, bobcats, and numerous non-game birds and animals.
 

West Rolling Hills Park

West Rolling Hills Park is operated by the Corps of Engineers and located on the south side of Milford Lake. As its' name implies, the park's landscape is made up of gently rolling hills with open fields of native prairie grass surrounded by timbered areas.
