A joint venture was formed between Kansas Wildlife and Parks and the Kansas Power and Light (Westar Energy) company in December 1987. The venture set aside 1385 acres for public hunting in Unit #1 and it also set up the availability of approximately 5000 acres by permit.
Wildlife area #1 is located straight North of Belvue. This area is available to the general public with uncontrolled access for hunting and fishing.
Wildlife area #2 or the William B. Hanzlick area is located almost completely within the fenced in area of the energy center. Access to this area is controlled through the guard house on the East side of the property. The general public is allowed to use this area by permit only. Permits can be obtained at the guard house.
Wildlife area #3 has been designated as a wildlife refuge and hunting, fishing, and public access are prohibited.
Area #4 the Oregon Trail Nature Park showcases the natural eco-systems of Kansas, and borders the historic Oregon Trail along its southern edge. Come take a walk on one of three nature trails. The park also has a shelter house and amphitheater. The area is rich in wildlife.
