See the simplicity of the first homes when you visit the 1875 Krause House. Learn how the Mennonites from Russia introduced the Turkey Red Wheat to Kansas in the Wheat Palace. Explore the early 1900s in the restored Schroeder Barn and Friesen House. In the farmstead experience the Heritage Gardens. See the Wheat Bell, a replica of the Liberty Bell made from Turkey Red Wheat by local Mennonites in 1976.

| Cyrus K. Holliday and a group of businessmen from Topeka and Atchison secured incorporation of a railroad in 1859. Because of the disruption of the Civil War, however, construction did not begin until 1868. It took four years to complete the line to the Colorado border. From there it was extended on across southeastern Colorado and into New Mexico. Eventually the railroad became one of the most important links between Chicago and Los Angeles.

| Lost Spring, which is actually 2 1/2 miles west of the village of Lost Springs, was a major watering place and campground for the Santa Fe Trail. There is much superstition and mystery surrounding the spring. |
